Hi everyone,
About 20 hours ago, if you have been connected to global news, you already know that a 7.7M earthquake struck Myanmar about 20 hours ago. Tremors and effects of the seismec event reached all the way to Bangkok and beyond, with considerable impact to structures in Bangkok.
A quick update for you all:
We are safe. Although we're 300 km closer to the epicenter than Bangkok, seismic activity doesn't always travel the way you'd expect. No one in our city reported any unusual feelings or observations; however some reports from villages near the project's farm say that there were termors felt out there.
Myanmar reports at least 144 fatalities already from the quake, with certainly many more injured. Please pray for the people suffering there and that those of the Body in-country may be resourced to respond to the needs to show our Father's mercy and love in practical ways.
Chiang Mai, Thailand (which borders Myanmar) reported 3.3 M tremors in the region, with felt effects but no reported significant damage or casualties. Colleagues of our who live in the greater Bangkok Region have reported damage to their apartments and to their workplaces (source: The Thaiger News)
Significant impacts of the quake were felt. At least 6 people have died in structural failures already with countless more injuries. Former colleagues of ours in Bangkok have mentioned damage to their apartments & workplaces also. A high level of anxiety has blanketed the Greater Bangkok Area, given the significance of the tremors & the uncertainty around structural damage—there are hundreds of high-rises that may have been built without factoring in earthquake events.
Please, in your prayers, lift up those in Myanmar, in Bangkok, and in other areas significantly impacted by this natural disaster. We hope and pray that local believers rise to the occasion and demonstrate practical evidence of God's love to the communities and families impacted.
Thank you for your concerns and your partnership.
Daniel came to know Jesus and follow Him before he can remember. “I’ll do anything for you, God—just not missions” was common in his prayers until he surrendered that last phrase while serving at a Bible camp. 10 months later, he served as a teaching missionary in a country he’d barely heard of. That experience transformed Daniel’s perspective and he’s been wrecked for the ordinary ever since.
Carla learned about Jesus from her mom, and she believed it was good to follow God. In college, an American teacher explained to her the meaning of the Gospel, which moved Carla to eagerly accept Jesus. After graduating, she saw how temporary her field’s achievements were, so Carla resolved to labor for the eternal kingdom instead. Carla sees her calling in walking alongside others and participating in the transformation of lost souls being restored to Jesus.
My Current Role
Daniel & Carla are working in a marginalised “Creative Access” nation where openly sharing about Jesus is not welcome. The ministry group they work alongside seeks to intervene in and proactively battle human exploitation and trafficking. They give leadership to various parts of the project, including café business consultation, discipleship & spiritual support, and systems integration.
About CMA
Daniel & Carla are sent with the Christian & Missionary Alliance Canada, which exists to multiply disciples in every part of the world as people who follow Christ, doing this through a focus on prayer, leadership, ministry, stewardship, and overall effectiveness. Founded in the 1880s, the Christian and Missionary Alliance is committed to Jesus and His mission. They send people to live on mission locally and globally, aiming to be a Christ-centred, Spirit-empowered, Mission-focused movement in everything it does.
