Call to Ministry & Testimony
I grew up in a Christian home, and accepted Christ into my life in Sunday School. Growing up I found it difficult to share my faith, making me feel less than the other Christians around me. This feeling also made it difficult in being in an intimate relationship with God-how can I be in a relationship with someone, when I
struggle to understand how someone perfect would sacrifice His own life for someone imperfect, and how could He love an imperfect person like me. In Grade 12, I had the opportunity to attend Legacy Youth Conference, and it was during that weekend, I felt God's presence and voice wash over me, telling and reminding me that while I am imperfect, I was His, He made me the way He wanted, and there were no mistakes. During this weekend I was continually brought back to 1 Timothy 4:12, and Jeremiah 31:3, and countless times since then, as it reminds me, we are all unique and special to God, His love is never-ending, and He doesn't compare us to those around us.
In 2017 I was baptized, and while the thought of being in front of a bunch of people caused anxiety, I was reminded that in that moment it was between God and I, and everyone around and everything going on didn’t matter. This is something I continue to remember and remind others who are unsure of being baptized. While as a church congregation we want to celebrate and be part of this amazing step of faith, that moment is special and unique to each individual, as it’s between the individual and God.
In 2019 I was invited to attend Envision, a conference opportunity for young adults within the Alliance Denomination across Canada. There was a lot going on that week, but what I remember most was the worship. I remember at one point we were singing, and I was so overcome with emotion I broke down. I was struggling a lot at the time, although I had never admitted it to anyone. But I had been struggling with direction and where God was calling me and wanting me to be. The doubt of my past of struggling with understanding how a perfect God could and would love an imperfect person like me came back. One of the ladies who acted as a mentor for the week came over and sat with me. At one point she started to pray, and as she did I began to draw. I drew a tree with a person sitting on each side. In the middle of the tree, I drew a hole. When she was done praying, we chatted about the picture and she read Psalm 23 over me, which I wrote in the hole of the tree - as if it was engraved there. I look back and I remember that God wants to sit with me, where I am, wherever I want to be and wants to listen to everything and anything I have to say. To this day, when I am feeling overwhelmed or unsure, I go for a walk and sit by a tree. Here I feel at ease from the noise and chaos of what is happening in my life, and I have a heart-to-heart with God. Sharing the emotions I’m feeling, the things that are bothering me or the unsureness I feel of the decision ahead. I don’t always hear from God, but there have been times where I feel a sense of peace after laying my heart out. Over the years, I’ve taken notes about what I’ve shared to God, and after there’s a verse referenced, and reference to a Bible story to look back on, or a word that could only have been from God to assure me that He is sitting with me in my pain and struggle, He is in control, and He has a plan for me that I could never imagine for.
There are times where I’ve fallen back into believing the lies of being inadequate, not enough, or unable to do the things God is calling me to do. But I look back over the notes of prayers, talking to trusted people in my life, and remind myself of His endless love and grace for me. Over the last several years I’ve gained confidence in trusting God in each step. While it’s frustrating and hard to step into the unknown, I know that He has me and His plan will be revealed in time-which is something I continue to remind myself of.
