Small Beginnings

Jon, Connie and David (David 2 days old)

David Evan Lim was born June 12, 2010 at 11:20am and weighed in at 7lbs, 13oz.  The labour was very smooth (compared to Christopher) and Connie is healthy.  David is eating a lot (as I write this he is already 12lbs) and Chris is adjusting to having a new baby brother. (He shares his 'Bear Bear' with David when David cries.)

It is amazing holding a newborn.  They are so tiny and fragile, and there is a sense of wonder and mystery as you pause to look at a tiny one.  How is it someone so tiny, can grow so big and have such impact?  It is daunting at times parenting, realizing that small beginnings have deep foundational impact into the make up of each child we interact with and raise.

Daring To Dream Big

"Again he asked, "What shall I compare the kingdom of God to? It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into a large amount of flour until it worked all through the dough." Luke 13:18-21

There is something compelling about something little making a large impact.  It is amazing how the yeast works its way through a baked good and transforms it completely.  It changes the shape, the structure and the taste of bread.  This is such a core ethos to Christianity.  We long that our student ministry would be like this: able to shift and change structures; able to bring aromatic tastes that are heavenly, and able to be a delight.

My favorite part of the many of the parables of growth have to do with the insane yield Jesus invites us to believe in.  A mustard seed becomes a bush typically, but we're asked to believe it becomes a tree?  The sower's seed yields 30, 60 and 100 fold rather than 2, 3 or 4 times.  I feel like there's a Kingdom secret we're in on here: would you dare to dream big? We are going to dare this year.  To believe that God can grow magnificient things from small things!

Prayer Requests

1.        Staff are moving on to new things!  Lisa Laird (former Ministry Director Edmonton) is going to direct IVCF Ministry in Saskatchewan.  Matthew and Jill Church (Aboriginal Student Ministry)  are relocating to IVCF in Victoria, BC.  Katherine King (Asian Students on Kampus) is launching onto a year of exploration and has left IVCF.  We are proud of our colleagues and delight in being a sending mission.  Pray with us that God would use these women and man  to bring the Kingdom of Jesus Christ in radical and extraordinary ways where they go.

2.        Pray for the Edmonton Team to creatively embark on a New Student Outreach together.  Pray that student leaders would: a) know Christ intimately, b) know themselves well, and c) desire to know others deeply.  May our student fellowships be places that bear witness to Jesus, engage the campus in its fullness, and disciple our students fully in Christ.

3.        We long for more staff and more students leaders who have full hearts for God, who are extraordinary in character and influence, and who have the ability to winsomely translate the gospel into a variety of contexts.  We long for radical, courageous men and women of God to be involved in the local IVCF work here in Edmonton.

4.        Pray for us that we would not settle for mediocre dreams. We long to dream dreams that are God-sized dreams and work hard in the place he’s called us to witness and see what God will do in this day and age.

5.        Pray for Connie and I as we raise Christopher and David.  We want the boys growing up knowing Jesus deeply, and our hope is that they would learn to communicate the gospel to their peers in word, thought and deed with deep integrity.  Pray with us!
